Criterion-Based and Norm-Based Evaluation Methods/Tools

Due to the large amount of students that might be testing on State or national based tests such as the CBEST, the CSET, the MCAT, etc., these states are scored or measured using the norm-based evaluation as the scores are ranked. These tests take long time to create and to take. Some, up to 6 hours! The students are ranked by their test achievement. The criterion-based test, on the other hand, is usually created individually, for example, by a teacher. These tests are short in duration, typically a one class period. The criterion-based test measures the skills and knowledge a student has mastered and the scores are given in percentages. The teacher utilizes sites such as google forms, kahoot, quizlet, jeopardy/online games, and/or ed puzzle. As an educator it is in the best interest of the students and the teacher to be very comfortable with all these sites.
